Golden Days

Zelda: 1900 - 1948

Year: 1932
Location
Phipps Psychiatric Clinic, Baltimore

After relentless ballet practising sessions, sometimes lasting up to 10 hours per day and stopping only for water, 34 year old Zelda suffers a nervous breakdown and enters Phipps Psychiatric Clinic of Johns Hopkins University Hospitalin Baltimore.

She starts work on writing a novel, Save Me The Waltz, a thinly disguised account of her life with Scott. She sings:-

On my own again
So full of doubt, so full of pain
I wonder why, he doesn't call
Sure to god he knows, I'm lonely
Haven't heard a word from him at all, in ages

What a sorry place
This really is a sorry place
The crowd are all as mad as me
Feels like I've been here, forever
Happiness a misty memory (segue choir)

Was it all a dream
Golden days
Nothing but a dream
Golden days
When he made us the talk of the town
Golden days

Golden days
Rain was not allowed
Was it better to have loved him and lost him
Than never have him in my life at all

This is all I do
I paint a hand, I paint a shoe
I give them limbs of steel to climb
Wasn't I his favourite dancer
Once upon a very perfect time

Was it all a dream
Golden days
Nothing but a dream
Golden days
When he made us
The talk of the town

Golden days
Days without a cloud
Golden days
Rain was not allowed
Was it better to have loved him and lost him
Than never have him in my life at all
